Will Smith is Streaming His New Movie on HBO Max
There’s no denying that Will Smith is a talented actor. He’s brought to life many real-life people in biographical dramas, including Muhammad Ali in the film Ali, Chris Gardner in The Pursuit of Happyness, and Bennet Omalu in the sports drama Concussion.
The film “King Richard,” starring Will Smith and his memoir “Will,” have introduced a new perspective to society. Watching the movie and reading Smith’s book has created an opportunity for audiences to witness Black men who are not afraid to voice their frustrations and desires. King Richard and Will both inspire hope and determination in individuals by showing that it is possible to overcome obstacles with hard work and dedication.
The social climate in the U.S. is currently at a precarious point. The past few years have seen Black Americans’ experiences being trivialized, from courtrooms to the halls of Congress all the way down to schools. It’s also not an overstatement to say that the experience of Black Americans has never been more fragile. But because this is true, it is important to continue telling stories about them- particularly stories of Black fathers, partners and businessmen who are daring to dream, making mistakes, growing through adversity, failing and succeeding.
Smith and Williams share a number of similarities. The most important things they have in common is that they were both black Americans who lived during the same time period, and they both created noteworthy work.
The highly anticipated film about the Williams sisters, “King Richard”, is playing in theaters. “King Richard” follows the story of Venus and Serena Williams as their father crusaded for his daughters to become tennis stars. The film will play in over 1,400 movie theaters across the United States and on HBO Max.
“Venus and Serena” is a comprehensive portrait of the Williams sisters’ youth, familial life and meteoric rise to the top of the tennis world. “The filmmakers follow Venus and Serena’s inspiring journey from their earliest days on the court as young children into two of the most accomplished female athletes of all time.”
Venus Williams is an American professional tennis player who has been ranked number one in singles on three different occasions, and reached Wimbledon singles finals twelve times. Venus Williams was born in 1980 and had a great older sister (older by two years) and father (Richard Williams)who were both tennis players that taught her everything about tennis since she was 3 years old. Her dad would even tape balls to the top of the net while she attempted to volley them – something he had seen Pancho Gonzalez do on TV.
Venus Williams is the big sister, and in many ways became her father’s blueprint for developing Serena Williams later. After all, he coached them both, starting when they were four years old.
The Williams Sisters are the most dominant tennis players in the world, but they had to overcome many obstacles before they could achieve their success. As African Americans living in Compton, California, Serena and Venus faced racial discrimination and dealt with the difficulties of life in a gang-infested neighborhood. Their parents were both talented athletes but had no experience coaching tennis, so they taught themselves the sport.
In 2006, Smith was the first Black man to receive an Oscar nomination for acting. In 2007 he received a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance and in 2010, he became the first African American male to win a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy. It’s not difficult to see why Smith would be drawn to Williams’ story. After all, Williams faced a lot of adversity, including rejection from mainstream Hollywood because of his looks, but nevertheless achieved global success that many people never will.
“I felt like I knew him immediately,” Will Smith
The past has an effect on many people. No matter where they are from or what their background is, the past can have a tremendous impact on them. For example, Williams grew up in the Jim Crow South and Smith grew up in West Philadelphia. Both men have had experiences that have shaped their lives for the better or worse.
Smith and Williams both faced painful experiences in their early childhoods yet used this adversity to develop the self-confidence needed to be successful adults.
If you’re a fan of the Williams sisters, then this movie is for you! The King Richard biopic tells the story of tennis legend Richard Williams’ journey to turn his daughters Venus and Serena into the most successful athletes of all time. And best of all, you can watch it online on HBO Max.
