One of the reasons rap and hip-hop became popular was because artists would discuss issues that were important to the black community, such as police brutality and how tough life in the hood was.
Recent events have led to many rap artists to become activists in their community who spoke out against these things. T.I. has been outspoken for years on issues concerning the black community, which has made him popular outside of the music world.
His most recent act of activism was in the Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor cases. T.I. was one of the first artists who spoke out against what happened to Arbery and demanded answers about his death.
“No MO Talk…I’m just sick of seeing, videos, posting pics & stories like these over and over with NO ACTION TAKEN!! MESSAGE BLACK MEN & WOMEN…WE ARE BEING HUNTED!!! These aren’t mistakes or coincidences…ITS WAR..So treat it as such. IT WONT STOP UNTIL WE STOP IT!!! #UsorElse.”
T.I. also spoke out against police brutality after an arrest outside his home, located in a gated community where security guards confronted him.
T.I. has also been an advocate for gun control. After the Parkland High School shootings, he spoke on having gun control in this country.
“People think the felons are the ones that’s causing all of the problems, but it seems as though people who have been given guns licenses, who have bought guns legally, are the ones that are causing mass hysteria. I think our system is broken.”
Last March, T.I. was honored by the Georgia State Senate for his activism. T.I. not only speaks out about injustice, but he also fights for the less fortunate. He started nonprofits Harris Community Works and For the Love of Our Fathers.
Respectively, the two organizations focus on encouraging and steering disadvantaged children toward better opportunities and assists persons who have Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Some people see T.I. as a threat, but others see him as a hero who is unafraid to speak his mind despite his money and popularity in the world, and that’s not a bad thing.
