Emmy winner and “Black-ish” star Tracee Ellis Ross could be adding Oscar nominee to her resume if the reviews for her new movie “The High Note” is any indication.
So far, the reviews of the movie have been very positive for not only the actress but the film as well. The movie is the story of an aging superstar singer Grace Davis who wants to venture into new music and her young assistant who wants to not only fulfill her dream by becoming a producer but help to fulfill her boss’s vision as well.
The movie also stars Dakota Johnson of the “Fifty Shades of Grey” films and actor/producer/rapper Ice Cube as Davis’ manager Jack Robertson.
If fans are expecting to see a movie based on the life of singer Diana Ross who is Tracey Ellis Ross’s mom, they will be disappointed. Although it features Tracey Ellis Ross singing for the first time, the movie is more about the relationship between Ross and Johnson’s characters and how each is helping the other fulfill their dreams. What is it not, however, is the retelling of the Diane Ross story.
It might have been easier for Ross to do that; however, she makes this role her own, and, at least to some critics, it is paying off.
Ross is receiving high praise for not only her acting performance but her singing as well. This role might be the break-out role that turns Ross from a TV actress to an Academy Award winner.
You can decide for yourself. “The High Note” comes out Friday, May 29th, and can be seen on several streaming services.
